Final reflection post

I have finally completed my Brief 2 portfolio project for ireflect. It was an awesome journey sharing my experiences weekly on the topic of my musical creation, A Son of Polynesia EP, on Blogger. I am really happy so far with the product and even though it is 90% complete, blogging has really helped me set up tasks in order to get things done, and has played the role of reminding me that I have things to work on. Its really kept me on my toes. However I do feel I could've managed my time better.  The assessments have been piling up, and again I have been lacking in focus, as I have put too much energy into working on my music and getting noticed in the NZ Hip Hop scene, instead of making schoolwork a priority. I had ample amount of time and strength to get them done as soon as possible, but now its rushed work and I am worried could affect my overall grade for this paper.  I have continued to discuss with my mentors and fellow students in my music class,...

Comment on Gary Xus post:  Hey Gary, I personally felt this was my favourite Spiderman film (and Holland is my new favourite Spider-man over Garfield and Macguire). I felt he also had the charisma of Spider-man but balanced it out with the awkwardness of Peter Parker. Homecoming got a lot of things right but also took aspects of the previous films and used them as drivers of this story. I love your breakdown of this film. I did like that you put a video to compliment your review as well. I feel viewers such as myself can really interact with your points whilst also enhancing the written work. A good time length for your video too. I feel whenever videos are any longer than 15 minutes on a film review, I tend to tune out. Keep up the good work Gary. Comment on Anthony Burtenshaws post: Hey Anthony Loving the design of your website may I say. I love the detail you go into for the process of your painting. I also like how you've explained the cultural significance behind it ...

Week 8: Outro

Image
I’ve come to my final post, and I’m still working on my sixth track. This week had been hectic as I’ve been trying to complete all my assessments in time, before I leave for Samoa. The backing track for this  is only one minute and fifty three seconds, yet it’s difficult to come up with a concept and speak on many societal issues as I have been. I’ve listened to a few Hip Hop albums and the way concepts flow into the outro track. I’ve noticed that the outro track is like the stamp or conclusion to your argument of the albums concept. The conclusion doesn’t bring any new ideas, it just sums up the Tracks which are like paragraphs that give points. So, the question I have posed to myself is what is my EP’s concept. Let’s dicsuss that. The EP is titled A Son of Polynesia. I’m a son of Polynesia, of samoan descent. The tracks are an insight into my life of being a broke rapper in New-Zealand, who doesn’t own his own vehicle, catches public transport where he sees pretty girls. ...

Week7: Every Time.

Image
This week I worked on the fifth track for my EP titled, Every time. I was having a midnight scroll one night last week on Youtube for my usual beat hunting and I came across the classic,J Dilla. I listened to the beat on repeat for a good two days, and I came up with this concept. Being wavey every time and showing love to all upcoming and local artists. Many fellow Auckland emcees have inspired my own sound. Melodownz, Poetik, Rizvan,Raiza Biza, who I have alrehomevrew, ady made mention of, whilst also adding inspirations Avondales, Team Dynamite and Young, gifted and broke. Big props to fellow homies and rappers Church & AP and my main toko, Yung Gxldie from Otara, who’s known me since 2014 in the Gray Ave. Big ups also to my old stomping grounds of De La Salle College, who played an essential role in helping shape my career.  So far in terms of progress for the debut of my EP, it has been shaping nicely. Outside the project, I’ve been nominated as a finalist fo...

Week 6: WHIP

Image
After two weeks of a creative block, I was able to find inspiration to record, mix and master my third track,  WHIP .  The term "whip" had been used as reference to when the steering wheel was  first  put into use in automobiles, it was called the "whip". The whip was also what was used to control the horses on a stagecoach, hence the analogy.  Many  years  later , various American hip hop artists noticed that the Mercedes-Benz logo resembled a steering wheel. They then proceeded to use the old  term  "whip" to describe any Mercedes-Benz vehicle. The term has now been generalised to classify any expensive automobile (or for any vehicle that is). Continuing off the themes of being poor through my music (Confessions of a broke rapper), acquiring a Car or “Whip”, has been one of my many struggles of being an upcoming artist. A lot of people have associated rappers with material things such as nice clothes, the latest cars...

Comments before mid reflection

Comment on Gary Xu’s proposal Hey Gary, I believe you have chosen an interesting topic to blog, as I personally am a huge fan of the Marvel comic books and films. I cant wait to read what kind of interesting ideas, reviews, theories and Easter eggs you noticed in the movies. This will help give a different outlook on the films, in your own words. I also like the idea of you looking at different civilisations, cultures, and cultural complexity of racism, which inspire and drive stories such as Black Panther for your theories. It relates to our contemporary world. For a personal suggestion,I feel that you could touch on other worldly matter, such as the questions of security and privacy in Captain America: Civil War, and also the ethics and morality into what drives superheroes, correlating with how we make decisions in everyday life. Awesome work Gary! Cant wait. Comment on Anthony Burtenshaws proposal Hey Anthony, I agree with Christine's comment. Your website...

Mid reflection post

So far for my brief two portfolio assessment, I have been posting weekly blogs about certain aspects and inspirations that is helping shape my music project, A Son of Polynesia EP. I currently have posted five blogs on Blogger.com, with week one speaking about not expecting hand outs on brand promotion or support from fellow artists. Week two, on Taika Waititi's comments on racism in New-Zealand and other kiwi rappers whom inspired me to write and release my intro track, A Son of Polynesia. Week three, touched on the egotistic persona some people put on social media, when they have money and how that pushed me to speak on the effects its had on my family, friends, and the pacific community, composing the second track on my EP, Confessions of a broke rapper. My nervous experience at an open mic night in my week four posting and finally week five, what inspired me to write track number three of the EP, Live life. I have been discussing with my mentors and fellow students in my music...
