Proposal
Since the age of 12, I’ve always wanted to be a musician. More specifically, a rapper. I’ve written many lyrics, listened to and analysed various Hip-Hop albums (some of which i would consider classics, as good is subjective to listeners). Albums such as Illmatic (Nas), the miseducation of lauryn hill (Lauryn Hill), and the Midnight Marauders (A tribe called quest), have had a tremendous amount of inspiration in my rhymes.
Throughout the years, I haven’t had the chance to embark further into a musical journey (besides listening to Hip-Hop/Rap), as I’ve had minimal resources to work with. However, last year I joined a music programme called Passion to Profession. It provides upcoming artists with tools such as music marketing, live/sound event management, beat-making production and songwriting. Skills I need, to better my craft and move further into the music business. One of the many goals i have in my music, is to create a definitive sound and choose a collection of my best tracks into an Extended player album (EP). So for my ireflect project I feel now it is time to begin raising further awareness of my talents, by beginning work on my EP. I have called the project, A Child of Polynesia.

Method:
For my method I am going to work on the EP throughout weeks 5-12. However because I study full-time and have the Passion to Profession programme to attend on Mondays and Tuesdays, this gives ample amount of time to work on music,on these days. So my main struggle would be to make sure I'm managing my time wisely each week.Below I have made a plan to follow (content in posts may vary):
Post 1: REFERENCES
This week I will be focused on the concept of my EP, exploring my inspirations for the sound I would like to hear on the EP, and also showcase writing activities I utilise in my rhymes. Certain themes will also be incorporated such as family, drug-abuse, struggles of university and what it means to be polynesian.
Post 2: TRACK 1
This week I will reflect on the process of creating the intro track of the EP, including the stages going through to get that done (writing activity) and the equipment used to carry out the process (Pro tools, recording equipment).
Post 3: SKELETON INTRODUCTION
This week I will be using my first track as a skeleton for an EP. This will set the base and concept of the rest of the EP. I will be speaking with my mentor, Soko Lapez.
Post 4: MASTERING
I will be working with my mentor again, Soko Lapez. I will also ask a few questions in an interview, asking Soko for advice for the rest of the EP. This will include asking him what he would put into his own music. He will also be mastering the track.
Post 5: LIVE LIFE (TRACK 2)
I will be introducing one of my tracks, Live life, which you can find on my soundcloud. I will explain the process of how I wrote this song. This song will become track number 2 of my EP.
This week is going to be hectic, I'm going to try and finish my other school work, however I will be working on and fixing up track number 3 of my EP. This songs lyrics and switch up of my flows will be explained in this post.
Post 7: NEW TRACK (TRACK 4)
This is the final week to complete a new track. However it will be difficult as it is the last track of my EP. Again, I will be drawing up ideas from other local rappers, my class at Passion to Profession, and looking at the format of EPs, into what techniques are required in marketing.
Post 8: SON OF POLYNESIA
This week I will be focusing on the finishing touches of the EP, the promotional art, social media marketing, and printing of the hard copies. I plan on selling this as a CD. This is to raise awareness of my talents. I will also reflect and talk about future projects and how this EP will help me put my stamp in New-Zealand Hip-Hop.
- Am I rapping the way I intended to?
- Is everything going to schedule? If not, why?
- If something went wrong, how did I overcome that obstacle?
- Have I made any changes that affect the overall vision of the EP?
In addition, I will also reflect on weekly tasks with these questions below. It will help with self-critisicism and feedback.
- After a day of finishing a task, am I still satisfied with the result?
- If I changed parts of my EP , what was changed?

Hey Jonah, I think the topic you chose for your blog is awesome, music is something that is a huge part of my life too. I like how your upcoming EP is focusing on Polynesian culture, for us Kiwi/Islanders it's is a big part of our lives however in comparison to the world, it is tiny, and there are not a lot of rappers/musicians (outside of nz/aus) who talk about their culture and island upbringing. I look forward to hearing your music and the influence that you could potentially create with your connection to Polynesia!
